We love the fact that our shop in Virgil is surrounded by an abundance of farmland!
At home, we grow our own raspberries and blackberries and we fill the gardens around The Pie Plate with tomatoes, herbs and lettuce. All summer you will see us out snipping chives for soup, oregano for pizza, picking heirloom tomatoes to top the salads or mint for the iced tea.
We are proud of the fact that all of the produce for our fruit pies is local!
We'd like to introduce you to a few of the local farmers and the produce they grow for us:
Ed and Diana DeMarco of Blumin Acres
Line 1
- Blueberries
Ken and Julie Hunter of Niagara Harvest
Hunter Road
- tart cherries
Dave and Shirley Froese of Froese Farms
Niven Road
- Strawberries, plums, apricots, peaches, pears, apples
Harold of Alpine Nursery
Creek Road
- elderberries, tomatoes, peppers, garlic onions, squash
Rose and Ken Bartel of Bartel Organics
Lakeshore Road
- Rhubarb, sugar pumpkins, tomatoes, potatoes, lettuce
Brian and Erin Rowan of B&E Honey Farm
Line 9
- We use their local goldenrod and blueberry honey in our bread, granola, viniagrettes and for canning our peaches and pears.
White Meadows Farms
Effingham Street
- Maple syrup
On Saturday mornings we also love to visit the Niagara-on-the-Lake Farmers Market located just up the street on Niagara Stone Road to reap from their harvest. Often the choice for our soups on the weekend depends on what we bring back from the market.
